Wolves Win NICAP Tournament in Ottawa  (August 2009)

The Niagara United Soccer Club Great Wolves won the U16 division of the National Capital Invitational Girls Soccer Tournament this past weekend.  Despite having only one sub for the last two days of the tournament, the girls dug deep into themselves and proved what they are made of.

The first game with Sarnia Spirit was dominated by the Wolves, but they were unable to put them away and the game was tied 2 - 2 at the end forcing penalty shots.  The Wolves lost to Sarnia 3 - 2 on penalties, but that was to prove to be the only loss that the Great Wolves would suffer the entire weekend.

Their next game on Saturday against the Whitby Iroquois team was a win with a 3 - 0 score for the Wolves.  This was the game they lost two players in.

On Sunday they were down to 1 sub who was injured the day before and they faced Cumberland United who had won their 3 previous games and was looking to make it a perfect 4.  The girls rose to the occasion and after an extremely hard fought game defeated Cumberland 3 - 2 to move on to the semi-finals.

On Monday morning in the semi-finals the Wolves played host team Nepean Hot Spurs who were coming off a 4 game undefeated tournament round.  It was a back and forth game on a muddy field but the girls prevailed and defeated the hosts 2 - 1.

The final game for the championship on Monday afternoon was a repeat of their first game that matched the Wolves against the Sarnia Spirit.  Once again the girls despite being short benched the entire weekend, controlled most of the game and this time defeated the Sarnia Spirit 1 - 0 to take home the championship trophy.

The coaching staff is very proud of the girls and what they accomplished this past weekend, especially looking at the circumstances they had to face.  Congratulations girls, the victory was yours and you most certainly deserved it.

Bob
